History

The history of the diocese, county and city of Lyon is a long one. The city of Lugdunum was built by the Romans on the site of an old Gaulish hill-fort and was recognised by the Roman Senate in 43 BC. A natural hub for travel as both rivers are navigable by boat the Romans built four great roads anchored on Lugdunum. Lugdunum in time became the capital of Roman Gaul. By 197 AD though it had been sacked at the culmination of Rome's bloodiest of civil wars. Imperial reform under various Emperors saw Lugdunum wane as a seat of power.

In this section you will find details on the history of Lyon.

The City

The boundary of the City of Lyon was established by treaty with the Count of Forez in 1167. The south-west limit was fixed on the abbey of Saint Irénée, the north-west limit was determined by the stream of Charavay, the north-east limit was set upon the abbey of Saint Sebastien, and the south-east limit was set at the entry to the Rhône bridge. As time passed the south-east boundary expanded to encompass the district of Béchevelin.
