The Map Library

Our objective with the map library is to produce a set of maps that are linked together, allowing the user to navigate the maps just by using the mouse. To achieve this we use the Profantasy product Campaign Cartographer 2 (CC2) which has a viewer application that can be downloaded for free from their website. CC2 uses the FastCAD engine to deliver a map-making application. As the application is CAD based (rather than based on an imaging application) it includes functionality for calculating distances between objects, allowing maps to be created that are very accurate.

With the map library the user is able to look at a nation-level map and drill down to a location-level map in seconds. Our map library is divided into six levels of maps.

National Maps

There are currently six nation-level maps included in the map library. There is a Physical map of the kingdom which shows both elevation and the main rivers. There is a Drainage map which shows the five great river basins of the region. There is a Political map which shows the borders of all the kingdoms Duchies, Counties, Seigniories, and Viscounties as they were in 1328. There is a Language map that shows where the eight main language groups were spoken and their regional dialects. There is a Diocesonal map showing the Diocesonal boundaries and the locations of Bishoprics and Archbishoprics. Finally there is an Administrative map showing the nominal Baillages and Sénéchausées. These maps utilise a baseline map derived from satellite data. They are designed to give the referee a high-level view of France.
