The People

In all of our work in researching life in mid-14th century Lyon and working on our products without a doubt the hardest part has been trying to understand the medieval mindset. It is relatively easy to find out what people did via contemporary documents but much harder to determine why they did what they did. In the absence of an explanation it is all to easy to rationalise with our modern minds the possible motivations behind events. It seems intuitive though that this is likely to be a pitfall. After all, what likelihood is there that a mind formed in the culture and circumstances of 14th century life will be similar to one formed in the modern world?

Our goal then is to provide a framework for beginning to understand the gap that lies between ourselves and a medieval character, for the purpose of being able to better understand the medieval mindset and through this understanding be able to portray medieval characters more authentically.
